Thomas, James Allen & George Washington ...

submitted by Ed Thomas

Enlisted at the age of 17 at Camp Carolina in Neshoba County as private. Fought in 19 battles and suffered a gunshot wound to the right foot in the Battle of Franklin on 1 Dec 1864. Granted a medical furlough, he walked home to Neshoba County, arriving there on Christmas Day.

He was married twice: (1)Mittie Brantley and (2) Mary Catherine Henry. He died in Neshoba County, MS on 8 Oct 1929 at the age of 86.

George Washington Thomas was James Allen Thomas's older brother. He was 19 when he enlisted at Enterprise (Clarke Co.), MS and he died the 5th of January 1862 in Pensacola, Florida of measles during the measles outbreak there. He was unmarried.

Please note the five pages that I am submitting for your review.
Two pages I am submitting for inclusion on the Neshoba County, MS Military web-site. (1) Thomas brothers - for the “Soldiers of Neshoba County” web-page.
(2) Names of the Thomas brothers to be included on the Scotland Yard Roster as submitted from a newspaper article, but which omitted listing these members.
Three pages I am submitting to substantiate the fact that James Allen Thomas and George Washington Thomas, both of Neshoba County, were members of Co. K, 5th Regiment (Scotland Guards).
Soon I will try to send a photograph of James Allen Thomas and his wife in their later years. It is not a good picture, but sadly, the only one that we have been able to find from anyone in the extended family. Perhaps by posting it, it may “root” out a better one somewhere!!!! Surely a gentleman who lived to the age of 86 would have had lots of pictures taken.

Thanks so much for your work on the web-site and we look forward to your using this information on the Neshoba County Military web-page.

Sincerely, Ed Thomas
