Cumberland Men ...

submitted by Frank Cumberland

Thomas C Cumberland (My GG Grandfather) He entered August 5, 1861 and was discharged in April 26, 1865. Was wounded in the hand Battle of Atlanta 1864. Served as Pvt. (Note: See attached photo)

James B Cumberland as a Private, who mustered in at Enterprise, Mississippi. October 18, 1861 for 1 year enlisted July 16, 1861 at Philadelphia, Mississippi, July 30, 1863 was on Extra duty as Bridge Guard. He kept re-enlisting for periods of 10 months & 6 days and 6 months, until the end of the war. James has a CSA grave marker in the old North Bend Methodist Church Cemetery.

Riley A Cumberland Served as Private 1861-1865

Lewis C Cumberland (got the worst of it) He enlisted at Philadelphia, Ms., August 12, 1861, mustered in at Enterprise October 18. Went on furlough Feb. 11 to Mar 24, 1864. He was severely wounded and captured at Atlanta, Ga. July 22, 1864. Was taken as prisoner and sent to Military Prison, Louisville , Kentucky, than transferred to the notorious Camp Douglas, Illinois. Records contain a copy of Oath of Allegiance to the United States, which he had to sign on release. It describes him as being florid (Ruddy) complexion, dark hair, gray eyes, 5' 10", Sugar Lock, MS. (Not sure if Sugar Lock was place of residence or place released). (Note: if you look on your web site under the Soldiers section and further on "Sewell", you'll see copies of a letter written after the Battle of Atlanta. Page 2 of that letter mentions both Lewis as well as Tom).

Another brother John C Cumberland served Company F, 40th Mississippi Infantry. He was a private and served three years. (see photo attached).

I have quite a bit on the family before this generation and afterwards but always interested in more. My family is looking for the final burial of Thomas as we have his CSA marker. As a side note, my GGG Grandfather was Major Amos McLemore who was murdered at Deason House, Ellisville. Got a fighting group of ancestors eh?

Any help I can provide, just let me know.
Frank Cumberland
