Milling family
GREETINGS,
I am a descendant of the Milling family of Dixon community in
Neshoba
County, Mississippi.
Most of the ancestors are buried at Morrow cemetery. John Milling
was my great-great grandfather, - Joe Milling was my great
grandfather, -
William Alexander Milling was my grandfather, - Lula Viola (LV)
Milling Putnam was my mother. The family was interesting in that
William Alexander first married a woman named Lula Ogletree and had
several children, one of whom was Lester Carlton Milling.
Meanwhile, my grandmother, Sula Bounds, married a Mr. Gibson, had 2
children (Gertie and Grady), and than Mr. Gibson died. She then
married a Mr. Cleveland and had a son, Hayden, and Mr. Cleveland
died.
At this point William Alexander Milling married Sula. My mother was
their first daughter, Mr. Milling (as my grandmother always called
him) chose to name her in honor of his first wife, Lula. My
grandmother added the Viola to her name, and called her LV. That is
the only name she was ever called by. How strange is it to marry and
Lula and then a Sula? And how strange to name the daughter of the
second wife for the first wife. Not a popular decision!
Later, William Alexander's son (by his first wife) Lester Carlton,
married Sula's daughter (by HER first husband), Gertie Gibson. Their
children literally have a family tree that does not branch! However,
there was no blood relation between Lester and Gertie even though
they were officially sister and brother.
