Greetings,
Additional information on the Mount Nelson Cemetery. I have heard for a number
of years from older people of my community that there was a "Slave Cemetery"
there next to the church. I finally had a chance to stop and see for myself. If
you pull in the driveway on the east side of the church and pull to the far
upper left side (by the power line clearing) you will see two large stones. I
walked through there and noticed they were tombstones. there are several through
there from the mid to late 1800's. It is not know if they are slave graves or
not. there are several that are marked by regular rocks. several of the markers
are broken or trees have fallen on them. It was very exciting. if you are
standing in the mount nelson cemetery itself you will see two tombstones in the
woods and if you are looking for them you can see them from the highway, but
walk through the small patch of trees and you will see those tombstones as well.
Looking at the markers you noticed in the far back of it there was one marker
that was one of a minister. Two that were of men who were of the Masonic lodge.
some still have markers from a funeral home here in Philadelphia. the date on
one was for an infant that dated to the early or mid 1990's if not mistaken.
Here is the information on the Mt. Nelson Cemetery here in Philadelphia. First
let me share a bit of information I uncovered through some county history books
and from speaking with older members. Mt. Nelson was a church that was organized
around the year 1834, but at that time it was known as Campground Baptist Church
because there was a campground close by. It was not located at the site in which
it sets now. The church was later renamed when it was moved to its present site.
A man whose last name was Nelson donated the land for the church and the
cemetery so the new church was named after him, in which we get Mt. Nelson. The
cemetery that you have recorded names on is, in county record books, known as
Mt. Nelson Cemetery (White). This is a cemetery of only white people. The
cemetery information in which I sent earlier and am now providing to you is
known as Mt. Nelson Cemetery (Black). They are side by side of each other but
one is white's and one is black's. There are several in the black part of the
cemetery, however, that cannot be identified as to who they are because they are
only marked by sandstones. This is a large portion of them. There were a few
that actually had funeral home markers that I was unable to identify because the
information was missing. A few headstones were not legible so I could not get
the information from them.
Here is the names and dates of birth and death for all markers that I found in
the Mt. Nelson Cemetery (Black). There are a total of 17 that I found. May be
more in the woods I overlooked. This is not counting all the graves marked by
sandstone.
